Chess is a weekly, after-school, on-campus class at Forest Avenue Academic Magnet School in Montgomery, Alabama. This class is open to Forest Avenue students in grades K-5 only. Kids may take chess on Mondays or Fridays, they will not take chess on both days.

Classes are for new-to-chess and experienced players alike. Each class includes instruction, guided practice, and fun free play time. Students go directly to the school cafeteria for chess after their last class each Monday or Friday. Parents may pick up their kids after class or alert RCA to send them to GoodTimes (if registered with them).

Class Pricing/Discounts:

  • Monthly Class Price: $65

    • Classes are scheduled each Monday and Friday that school is in session between Sep. 5 and May 18.

    • Covers 1 day per week. Kids attend each Monday or Friday, not both.

    • Tuition covers months with 3, 4, or 5 scheduled classes.

    • In months with only 2 scheduled classes, students may attend one free 60-minute evening chess class at Faulkner. This serves as a make-up option.

    • For holidays (excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s weeks) or school pro-dev days, class will be held online via a Sunday Zoom make-up session.

    • No refunds or credits are given for school cancellations (e.g., weather) or missed classes. School-related cancellations will also be made up with a Sunday Zoom class.

  • Save $ when you:

    • Pay through December and get 5% off.

    • Pay through May and get 10% off.

    • Prepayments are refundable upon request, minus credit card fees and with past months recalculated at the regular $65/month rate (discount removed).

  • One-time registration fee: $15

    • A one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $15 includes a Forest Avenue Chess Team t-shirt.
