Chess is a weekly, after-school, on-campus class at Bear Exploration Center in Montgomery, Alabama. This class is open to Bear students in grades K-5 only.

Classes are for new-to-chess and experienced players alike. Each class includes instruction, guided practice, and fun free play time. Students go directly to the school lunchroom after their last class each Thursday and then be guided to the counselor’s room for chess after their last class each Thursday. Parents may pick up their kids after class or alert RCA to send them to GoodTimes (if registered with them).

Class Pricing/Discounts:

  • Monthly Class Price: $65

    • Classes are scheduled each Thursday that school is in session between Sep. 11 and May 14.

    • Tuition covers months with 3, 4, or 5 scheduled classes.

    • In months with only 2 scheduled classes, students may attend one free 90-minute evening chess class at Faulkner. This serves as a make-up option.

    • For holidays (excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s weeks) or school pro-dev days, class will be held online via a Sunday Zoom make-up session.

    • No refunds or credits are given for school cancellations (e.g., weather) or missed classes. School-related cancellations will also be made up with a Sunday Zoom class.

  • Save $ when you commit in advance:

    • Pay through December and get 5% off each month.

    • Pay through May and get 10% off each month.

    • Prepayments are refundable upon request, minus credit card fees and with past months recalculated at the regular $65/month rate (discount removed).

  • One-time registration fee: $15

    • A one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $15 includes a Bear Chess Team t-shirt.
